Mistakes when comparing agency prices
Six ways a price comparison goes wrong: mixed billing bases, introductory prices, ad spend, VAT, scope and starting prices.
Short answer
Comparisons go wrong when one-off and monthly fees are mixed, introductory prices are used, ad spend is blurred with fees, VAT is ignored, scope differs, or a starting price is read as a quote. Published pages show each pattern.
Most bad comparisons are not arithmetic errors. They are comparisons of things that were never the same. Here are six ways it happens, each seen on a supplier page I opened on 4 November 2026.
Mixing one-off and monthly
A website build is usually paid once and a retainer monthly. Almirsa prices websites as one-time payments[6], and Samco prices social media per month[1]. To compare them you need a period. Pick the term you would commit to and total both over it, which is what the service price guide does.
Using an introductory price
AdsDigital.agency lists a different first-month price from the price for following months[3], and CubicSofts shows a discounted price with a stated end date[4]. Comparing one supplier’s first month with another’s steady price flatters the first. Use the price you will pay for most of the term.
Blurring fee and ad spend
Leads Dubai says its ad budget is billed separately from its management fee[2], and Samco excludes ad spend from its paid social package[1]. Add the spend you plan to make as its own line, never inside the fee, or a supplier that includes spend will look dearer than one that does not.
Ignoring VAT
Of the 11 suppliers whose pages I list in the price guide, only CubicSofts says whether its prices include VAT[4]. A 5 percent difference is small against a wide gap and large against a narrow one, so get it settled for every quote. Ask your accountant how VAT applies to you.
Comparing different scopes
Two prices can describe different work. One agency’s own page shows how this goes: digitalfarm says its published figures are indicative market benchmarks to be validated through direct quotations, and that clients receive itemised proposals[7]. If the supplier itself says a figure is indicative, treat it as one. Make every supplier price the same brief, as described in how to get comparable digital marketing quotes.
Reading a starting price as a quote
Hikmah AI states that its packages start at AED 4,500 a month[5]. That is a floor on its own page, not a price for your business. Anything described as “from” or “starting at” is a prompt to ask for a quote, not a number to budget with.
One last point: the lowest total is not the best quote. It is the cheapest answer to the question as each supplier understood it. Read the scope before you read the total, and see what a digital marketing quote should state for the points to check. If you want me to quote, see my services and treat me like any other supplier.
